150: The First 2 Films of The 007 Countdown

This week's episode introduces a new, ongoing segment to the We Like Movies canon of content: "The 007 Countdown".

Starting today we will be counting down the 23 films in the James Bond franchise from worst to best (according to Matt's tightly curated ranking) leading up to our eventual discussion of Bond 24, SPECTRE in November. Want to know which 2 Bond films Matt considers the worst of the worst? You'll have to give this episode a listen.

Cast, POD Cast.

WLM Podcast #149: The M:I:RN Gushfest

We Like Movies. It's the truth. It says it right there in the title of the website and it's not false advertising.
But occasionally, often in fact, we LOVE movies. This week's episode addresses one such occurrence.

Oh, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways.

We also love Netflix, apparently, and we spend the first 15 minutes gushing about that.
This episode is basically just one big love fest. There's a whole lotta love.
So listen in, and share the love.

WLM Podcast #143: EX MACHINA et al.

We're back.
After a lengthy estrangement, Oscar and I reconvene for (no ego or hyperbole) quite possibly one of the most fruitful and rewarding podcast discussions we've ever had.

Maybe it was our time apart. Maybe it was the fact that we were positively brimming with opinions about this week's discussion topics. But whatever it was, we were firing on all cylinders tonight and we're especially proud of this episode.
That being said- it's a long one! So dig in and get comfortable.

Also- We discuss and spoil WHILE WE'RE YOUNG and EX MACHINA so if you haven't seen them yet you may want to bow out around the 35 minute mark. Fair warning.
(sigh) That'll do, pod. That'll do.

WLM Podcast #142: The CASSIDY RED pitch

Oscar's out of town this week and I'm currently in pre-production on a film so I thought I would take this opportunity to discuss westerns, my commitment to the genre, and the upcoming Kickstarter campaign for the production of a film entitled "CASSIDY RED".

On this episode I wax nostalgic, get personal, stew over my issues with the philosophy of crowdfunding, and finally pitch my project to you- our loyal, beloved, oh-so-attractive listeners. I promise it's not an advertisement episode. It's more of a "presentational exercise". But I'm proud of it, so give it a listen.

And, if you're so inclined, search "Cassidy Red" on Kickstarter beginning May 1st and read up on our campaign. Thanks everybody!

Matt's 2014 Theatrical Watchlist

A few years ago someone sent me a link to a list that Steven Soderbergh had published chronicling all of the media that he had consumed over a 12 month period. This included television, plays, books and movies. God only knows how long he's been doing this but his most recent list can be found here.

Inspired by Mr. Soderbergh (as I often am) I've been keeping my own personal watchlist to chart my viewing habits for the last 3 years. And while I'm not diligent enough to keep track of my television or literary consumption (the latter, regrettably, wouldn't be the kind of a list I would prefer to be made public), I have what I consider to be a very accurate tally of my cinematic experiences IN theaters over the last 12 months. In 2014 I made it to 80. In 2015- 100!!!

WLM Podcast #119: A Trilogy of Trilogy-talk (A Matt solo-pod)

Oscar is "on assignment" this week so I'm on my own. Just a man, a microphone, and a whole lotta thoughts.

Since the multiplex has run dry of worthy content (as it is wont to do every year during the last breath dog days) I've recently retreated into familiar "comfort food" at home: Rewatching the first season of TRUE DETECTIVE, AFI 100 Years 100 Movies CBS specials, and an impromptu marathon of 3 of the most beloved film trilogies of all time.
You know what they are. You don't need me to patronize you by listing them.

WLM Podcast #111: The Confessional Podcast

There are those films that we've seen, there are those films that we haven't seen... There are those films that we've seen that we would have preferred that we hadn't seen...

But, MOST importantly, there are those films that we're embarrassed to admit that we haven't seen.... And that's where this list begins...
We're getting a few things off of our respective chests, this week....

Don't judge us. Take pity on us. Join us in our collective self loathing. You know you want to...

WLM Podcast #100!!! We celebrate our centennial anniversary with THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL discussion

Well, dear friends. A conversation that began as a very casual, on again, off again chit chat about movies, television, literature, and pop culture as whole, somehow morphed and matured into a bona fide blog. That blog gave birth to a podcast and said podcast somehow made it to a triple digit episode count.

If you're reading this right now, then you had much to do with us making it this far and, on the occasion of our 100th episode, we would like to thank YOU so very much for tuning in and being a part of the We Like Movies family.
We really love continuing this ongoing conversation. It means so very much to us. And, with your support, continued patronage, and help in spreading the good word to your fellow enthusiastic cinephiles (or even the cinematically averse... what the hell.... we're not uptight if they're not) we hope to keep this going well into the quadruple digits.

Thanks so much, WLM-ers. This week we discuss Wes Anderson's newest ode du tableau- THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Listen early. Listen often.

Happy Hundy.

Grain of Salt: Matt's Top 10 Films of 2013

It's been far too long since I've been able to and it fills me with so much happiness to say this: what a phenomenal year for cinema the last 12 months turned out to be. 2013 was the annum in which the movies took an honest look at the upstart, critical darling that is modern "golden age" television and said: "We will not be ignored, we will not be usurped, we will not share the spotlight. We are movies, hear us roar!"

WLM Podcast #83: "We Like TV" - The BREAKING BAD-pod

It's finally over- the series that redefined the way we look at television, antiheroes, and methamphetamine delivery methods (hint: directly up the nasal cavity is a good place to start) has come to an end.

On this week's VERY SPECIAL episode of the We Like Movies Podcast we turn our attention to cinema's younger, perkier sister. Yes, for the first time, We Like Movies becomes We Like Television!
And with that- behold, dear listeners, the BREAKING BAD tribute podcast you didn't know you always wanted.

Give it a listen.... for Huell.
Just don't wake Huell.....

WLM Podcast #67 - SPRING BREAKERS and the Korine-Konundrum

Well it's that time of year when the weather starts to become more amenable, clothes begin to come off, students take a leave from their studies for a short time, and hedonism reigns supreme. Yes it's that glorious time of year known to us all as "spring break". And thanks to MTV, Girls Gone Wild, Arrested Development, and the South Padre Island chamber of commerce, the yearly ritual has been so entrenched in our cultural lexicon that it has become something or a right of passage (a right of passage with the distinct possibility of chlamydia).

So leave it to batshit firebrand Harmony Korine to take said ritual and use it as a launchpad for his latest speciously "artistic" foray into his special brand of fever dream filmmaking. The lascivious wunderkind is firing on all cylinders in his latest cinematic ode to barely legal shenanigans and Oscar Dahl and I watched the shit out of it.

Join us for a We Like Movies tribute to the first truly important film of 2013: the insta-camp-classic SPRING BREAKERS. Love it or hate it. It's a real movie and it's here to stay.

Spring Break Forever.
